Description:
The Central Mass Sparks Association is a registered 501(c)(3) Non-Profit organization, and through it operates “Rehab-78” which is an Incident Support Unit, providing rehabilitation and canteen services to first responders in both MA Fire Districts 7 and 8, consisting of over 50 Central Massachusetts communities. This organization was founded by a 17-year-old who has a passion for helping his community and initiated this as a way to give back.
Firefighting is known to be one of the most dangerous jobs in the United States, with one of the most common causes of injuries being overexertion and strain. Through this service, we aim to provide support and help minimize the number of injuries. We also provide critical initial victim and pet assistance to fire victims bridging the gap between the initial call and when Red Cross can arrive, which is generally between 2 and 6 hours.
Some rehab services we provide are hot and cold weather support like misting fans and cooling towels, and general scene support like benches and chairs for a place to sit for EMS to check in with first responders, tents for shade from the sun and protection from the weather, and decontamination wipes for fire fighters. Victim support includes blankets, clothing, personal care, kids activity packs, and notebooks. Pet support includes crates/carriers, leashes/collars, toys, and food/treats. Canteen services include snacks, drinks, and hot food for long term incidents.
In 2025, Rehab-78 answered the call for 28 incidences in 18 communities. Through April 2026, they have been to 19 incidences in 13 communities.
